13U Beat Barons For Tourney Win

Just like the Beatles song says, "They're Getting Better All The Time!"

At least that's the way it looks for Blue Wave's 13U, a first-season team that is just now starting to get the hang of things.

"Our guys have been working hard in practice and have shown continued improvement," Coach Rich Pohle said. "I was proud of their performance in the tournament."

Though the 13U Wave lost their first game of the Super Series April Fools Classic Tournament Saturday (3/31/07), they fought back for a 5-1 win against the OCBA Barons in the second game of the day.

The win was the result of a brilliant pitching performance by Jake Hawthorn, who only gave up three hits and one run, while striking out five batters in going the distance for the Wave.

Hawthorn was also 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, RBI, and scored a run. Also at the plate, Ryan Burke was 1-for-4 and scored a run; Chrisopher Roeder was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Nolan Broaddus walked; Chad Beane was 1-for-3; Sean Park was 2-for-3 and scored two runs; Christian Jett was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and scored a run; Matt Nolan was 1-for-2, hit-by-pitch, with an RBI; and Kyle Lazcano was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The defensive pay of the game came when Matt Nolan hauled in a tricky shot to the outfield to end a late-inning Baron's ralley.

With a 1-1 record in Pool play, the Wave earned the No. 6 seed and moved into the semifinals of the American 13U Division, where they lost to the Lake Elsinore Titans 10-8 in a see-saw battle where the lead changed hands several times.

"The boys battled back and never gave up," coach Pohle noted. "They are starting to gain some confidence."

Offensively for the game, Zach Rivera was 1-for-2 with a double, hit-by-pitch and scored two runs; Ryan Burke was 2-for-3 and scored a run; Christopher Roeder was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and scored a run; Nolan Boraddus walked twice; Jake Hawthorn was 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run; Chad Beane was 1-for-2, hit-by-pitch, and scored a run; Matt Nolan reached base on an error and scored a run; Kyle Lazcano walked; Christian Jett reached base on an error; and Carlos Cervantes was 1-for-2 and scored a run.
