10U Back On The Winning Track
They've been down, out, and beaten badly this season.
But, Blue Wave's 10U first-year team has not given up and is starting to see their hard work pay off.
"The boys have worked hard," Blue Wave Vice President Louis Baltierra noted. "And, they don't give up. It is a matter of time, practice, and patience before they turn into a team that wins consistently."
Compared to the beginning of the season when they lost their first six CCYB games in a row, the 10U Wave are now starting to come in to their own, winning three of their last four games, including a win over a team that had beaten then soundly in a scrimmage game only a few nights before.
In fact, the Lake Forest Dirt Frogs not only beat the 10U Wave in a scrimmage game on Friday, April 13, but they were fairly vocal and confident in doing so, scoring at all opportunities.
Of course, we all know what a difference a day can make. That's because the Wave defeated the same Dirt Frogs 8-7 in a revenge match the very next day in USSSA tournament April 14-15 where the wave went 1-2, which included an 18-0 loss to the Mavericks, the 8-7 win over the Frogs, and a 6-7 loss to the Sluggers.
In the win over the Dirt Frogs, Sebastian Lopez started and pitch well, giving up only one run in three innings while the Wave build up a 5-1 lead at the end of three. Lopez was followed on the mound by Joseph Siciliano and Michael Fiege.
The team came-from-behind in the bottom of the 5th and final inning of the game when, trailing 5-7, Austin Eckel drew a walk, Joseph Siciliano walked to set the stage for J.T. Jasinski, who drove an outside pitch down the right field line for a walk-off home run and a Blue Wave 8-7 win.
Offensively, Peter Lewis was 1-for-2 and scored a run; Jasinski was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and scored two runs; Lopez walked and scored a run; Fiege was 1-for-2 with a triple; Brent Ando was 1-for-2 and scored a run; Garrett Goodwin was 1-for-2; Eckel walked and reached on a dropped third strike and scored two runs; Siciliano walked and scored a run.
With a solid tournament performance under their belt, Coach Jordan Baltierra's troops won two CCYB League two games in a row Sunday (4/22/07), a 17-14 win over the Maywood Giants and a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the SoCal Blaze.
Nick Abrahams started against the Giants and was relieved by Joseph Siciliano and Austin Eckel.
Offensively against the Giants, Peter Lewis walked, singled, and scored three runs; J.T. Jasinski had three singles and scored three runs; Sebastian Lopez singled twice, had a triple, and scored two runs; Michael Fiege tripled and scored a run; Brent Ando walked, singled, and scored a run; Cody Tyo singled twice and scored two runs; Sean Childs singled, doubled, and scored a run; Abrahams singled a scored a run; Austin Eckel singled twice and scored a run; Tim Ruiz singled and scored a run.
The Wave scored two runs in the top of the 6th and held on to win a 5-4 dramatic game over the SoCal Blaze in the second game when Timmy Ruiz hauled in a fly ball to short center field and fired home to catcher Sean Childs to get the tying run out at the plate for the 3rd out and end the game.
Michael Fiege put the Wave into position for the win when, trailing in the top of the 6th inning, Tim Ruiz singled to lead off the inning. The next two Wave batters strike out. With two outs, Sebastian Lopez singles to put runners at 3rd and 2nd. Fiege then drilled a singled down the third base line to score Ruiz and Lopez.
Sebastian Lopez started on the mound, followed by Fiege and closer Cody Tyo.
Offensively, Peter Lewis singled twice and scored a run; J.T. Jasinski singled and scored a run; Fiege singled and drove in two runs; Brent Ando had two singles; and Tim Ruiz singled twice.
The team will now play the SoCal Blaze in a double header at 11 AM and 1:30 PM Sunday (4/29/07) at Harvard Park Field 2 in Irvine .
Cougars Outrun Wave 9-4
Blue Wave 13U lost a nine-inning game against the Canyon Cougars 9-4 Sunday (4/15/07) at El Rancho in Anaheim Hills.
Blue Wave runs came in the top of the 6th when Kyle Lazcano started of the inning with a single, followed by walks from Zach Rivera, Ryan Burke, and Chris Roeder, which scored Lazcano.
With bases loaded and one out, Chad Swanson singled to score Rivera and Burke, leaving Roeder at 3rd. Jacob Hawthorn then singled in Roeder to complete the scoring for the Wave.
Coach Rich Pohle said the team still has a lot to work on, specifically driving runners in when they are on base. In the game against the Cougars, the Wave stranded 10 runners and committed six errors.
Tyler Bridge came on in the 6th inning and completed the 9 inning game.
The team is off this weekend, but will resume with CCYB Playoffs on Sunday May 6th.
Wave Split With ABD Bulldogs
Blue Wave 14U split a double header with the ABD Bulldogs Sunday (4/22/07) at Windrow Park in Irvine to run their season record to 21-4-1 on the season and 9-2 in CCYB league heading into the playoffs.
Though the Wave was once the top seed in CCYB, the two losses in the last three league games has dropped the team into the top four or five teams heading into the playoffs that will start May 6th.
However, the Wave's record is still good enough to guarantee they will host a first-round playoff pool.
Coach Aron Garcia's team defeated the Bulldogs 7-2 in the first game, then dropped a 5-3 decision with 14-year-old standout Chase Harrison on the mound of the Bulldogs.
Ian Barwick started game one and give up only three hits in six innings.

In the second game, Seito Fujita started and struck out two in two innings, followed by Kevin Fiege, who gave up only one hit in five innings.
